My Story

Peter John Rowsell

Peter was born at the Queen Victorian Hospital (for the younger generation the Queen Vic Hospital was located where QV now stands) on 25 May 1950, and was the eldest of 5 children born to Skeeta and Patsy Rowsell.
With his 2 sisters, Joy and Jenny and 2 brothers, Kenny and Robert they grew up in Hick Street, Spotswood. In that time there was approx 43 children that lived in Hick Street and there was always someone to play with. He attended Spotswood State School and Williamstown Technical School. School friends from primary school are here today. A friendship that has lasted over 50 years.
Peter lost his Dad when he was 14 years old and he had to step up and become the man of the family which at times was the cause of many family arguments as Peter was still a child himself. His Mum found raising 5 children on her own quite tough at times, but they all pulled together and overcame lots of obstacles along the way. They are still to this day a very close nit group.
Peter met Marie at the then Postmaster General’s Department (now Telstra) and they became an item, even though they were still quite young. He being 17 and Marie 16. Peter worked as a mail boy and Marie as a typist. They were engaged when Peter was 20 and married when he was 21.
Claire came along 2 years later and the 3 of them began their journey.
They joined a camping club and for 16 years they travelled around and met a lot of people who are still friends to this day. Peter also played Lacrosse for the Williamstown Lacrosse club. He played for “Dad’s Army” which was a bunch of guys who were only there for the social side, as from memory I think over the 4-5 years that they played only won a hand full of games.
Peter took up a position with the Dept of Health and the family moved to Bendigo and lived in Kangaroo Flat for 5 years, but the itchy feet got to Peter and they moved back to Melbourne. After working for years in various public service positions, Peter decided to try his hand at other things. He joined his sister and brother-in-law in the antique trade, but not long after discovered go-karts.
Peter was hooked. Bought a kart, trailer and all the necessary para-phernalia to make him competitive. They joined the Go Kart Club of Victoria and soon Peter was involved with the committee. Over the time he has held the position of President and Secretary. They started up their own karting business called “Western Karts” and travelled far and wide to attend race meetings both as a trader and competitor. He was the secretary of the club until approx 2 years ago when he started to get sick.
Finding it too hard to continue to give the club his full attention, Peter stepped down. Both Peter and Marie also took on the position of canteen manager which Marie still operates to this day. They are both live long members of the club.
Peter lost his Mum when he was 33 years of age and 9 years later his sister, Joy, also passed away from cancer.
Peter’s traits included friendliness, love for people and getting along with almost everyone. He could talk on any topic and was a good conversationalist with a witty nature. He was also restless and impatient, did not like being on his own and loved his independence and freedom. He had a great love of music.
He was a good Dad, was a buddy to Claire and would cuddle and love her and protect her like a father. He was very proud of his son-in-law, Paul, and was over the moon when his grandson, Oliver was born. Peter loved him and enjoyed talking to Oli about his love of cars and car racing. He was Oli’s “Poppy Pete” and he was the apple of his poppy’s eye.
Peter was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago and since that time has endured, chemo and radiation treatment. Peter always stayed positive that he would beat this disease but over the last month accepted his fate that there was no more that the doctor’s could do. The last week of his life was pain free and on Thursday, 14 April Peter peacefully passed away.
