My Story

Samuel's parents were Pavel Mucaji born 1906 & Maria Mucaji (nee Balint) born 1912.  His father had 2 brothers named Ondrej who was the oldest, then came his brother Jan, he also had a younger sister named Katarina.  Samuel has other relatives, from his father's side, in Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), France, Sweden and Yugoslavia (Serbia).  From his mother's side, his mother's mother died & his mother's father remarried and had a son but Samuel had no idea who they were or where they were.  Samuel's father Pavel passed away in 1945 aged 38 after he was captured by Germans & died of starvation in a Concentration Camp in Hungary.  His mother Maria died after she hit her head in a fall in front of the Backi Petrovac Lutheran Church in Yugoslavia in 1987 aged 75.

Samuel's family come from a Slovakian background.  In the early 1930's Samuel's parents travelled to France.  His parents had 4 children, the oldest was Maria born in France in 1932, then they had Katarina born in Yugoslavia in 1934, then came Pavel born in Yugoslavia in 1936 & Samuel was the youngest born in Backi Petrovac Yugoslavia in 1938.

Samuel went to school in Backi Petrovac Yugoslavia where he attended primary school, he then became an apprentice tailor & qualified and worked as a tailor.  He married Susanna when he was 19 in January 1958.  Samuel & Susanna moved to Australia via Austria to start a new life together.

When Samuel & Susanna arrived in Australia in late 1958, they lived in Bonegilla New South Wales for a short while.  Once they moved out of Bonegilla they had 2 children named Dianne born in 1959 & Vlad born in 1960.  They moved to Victoria in the mid 1960's & then travelled to europe, namely Yugoslavia & Sweden in both 1965 & 1966.

In Victoria, Samuel worked at KSB Ajax Pumps for 40 years until his retirement in 2007.  He worked there as a machinist.

In 1980, Samuel, Susanna & Dianne travelled to Canada, USA, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria & Czechoslovakia.  During this time, they also caught up with many friends & family.

Samuel & his wife, loved going away to the country on long weekends, catching fish & making stew from the fish they caught.  They also loved picking various fruits from the farms & coming home with a variety of things including cherries, honey & chestnuts.

In 1998 Samuel became ill and had bypass surgery.  It was found that this was hereditary as he never smoked, he always ate healthy food & he was always average in weight if not a bit underweight for his height.

So sadly in June 2010, Samuel became very ill in what began as a terrible flu.  He was hospitalised and was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer which was the result of contact with asbestos products.  Samuel's illness was incurable and he suffered very badly with breathing during the 4 months between June & October.  Samuel's passing was a terrible sudden shock, he passed away peacefully at Epworth Private Hospital on Monday evening on 4 October 2010.
